The mural at the University of Houston’s University Center is an icon. The mural showcases leaders of the Chicano Movement along with Uncle Sam in the middle as the embodiment of a calavera. Different historical images of Mexican history are painted throughout the mural. It is a political statement as much as anything else, but [...]

Some students and staff at UH have provided alarming information that the Chicano mural at the UC, painted during the historic Chicano Rights Movement, might be removed due to proposed renovations at UC. Please sign this petition, which we plan to use in organizing to make sure that the mural stays up. Sign the petition [...]

It’s almost impossible for me to view a film without analyzing its message and implications. This usually makes my family ecstatic It is especially difficult to hold back when the theme of the movie has to do with socio-political reality or history. I barely saw Avatar last night…spoiler alert. Avatar was well received in the [...]

I could not have been prouder of and happier for Xavier Herrera, Danza Azteca Teokalli and all who participated in today’s Chiaui Nahui festival at Ripley House in Houston’s east end. A little conjunto music, some rock conciente, ballet folklorico and art all came together in a beautiful way. Words, and maybe even my little [...]

Congratulations to Jesus Medel and the entire crew of Museo Guadalupe Aztlan for a successful, well-attended photo exhibit opening. The exhibit, entitled Indian Native American Resistence in Venezuela, highlighted different cultural aspects of indigenous nations in Venezuela. The special guest was the Consul General of Venezuela to Houston. I’ll let the photos do the talking. [...]

I read a post at my friend’s blog, Heights Books-Libros. I guess I didn’t pay attention to the date on the post card, which wasn’t a surprise to the fam. I went today, instead of the date advertised of July 11th. I think it must have because I followed the link for the East End [...]

This is written into our founding document_ We are not ready for this change just yet, but we are headed toward that end. At the first floricanto that we sponsored, we recognized [...]
