Heights Books-Libros: A Festive Celebration
Yup. That’s just how they do it at Heights Books-Libros at 502 E 20th St (77008) at Cavalcade: lot’s of cultura, love and books you wanna read. The store is owned and operated by Blanca Alanis. If you’re coming from the north, and I know you are, exit Cavalcade of 45, take a right and its a few blocks down on your left.
Matthew Rosas, originally from Corpos, treated us to a reading from his book, The Legend of Mariquita. His work is about a young girl who has both the fortune and misfortune of having traits of a ladybug. He also read from a fresh short story that he had worked on, which made most of us reflect on some of the funnier traits of our tias and tios.
My baby girl, Citlali Chavana, herself a fan of Blanca Alanis’ poetry, picked out a book, which she cracked open as soon as we got home. Joaquin Tonatiuh, my 18 monther, couldn’t take his eyes off the conjunto players, which is rare, considering how inquieto he is. Roberto Rodriguez, recently featured in The Houston Free Press, regailed us with some old-school acordionaso. I couldn’t blame Joaquin for being so intriguied…(Keep reading after the pic).
Stop by when you get a chance. Keep the money in the community. I heard this thing one time, don’t know if it’s true: The Asian American dollar circulates eight times within their community before it leaves. Our dollar circulates but two times.
