La Raza Justice Movement bids farewell to 2009
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: December 31, 2009
La Raza Justice Movement bids farewell to 2009 and recounts activity. President to be a guest of honor at World’s Largest Rosca Event.
Description: A description of La Raza Justice Movement’s activity.
La Raza Justice Movement, one of the only organizations in the county openly calling for Self-Determination for the Chicano-Latino people, had a tremendous year of activity, and the group’s president will be a guest of honor at the World’s Largest Rosca.
La Raza Justice Movement, was part of a successful campaign to stop the jailing of immigrant children in Taylor, Texas in a retro-fitted jail called Hutto. La Raza Justice Movement hosted a public education campaign, in which, over 100 community members in Northeast Houston committed to shutting down Hutto. Through their efforts, and the efforts of thousands across the state, the Obama administration announced that children would no longer be held at Hutto, and that two other would-be “family detention centers” would no longer be used to jail children.
Soon after, La Raza Justice Movement organized a rally at James Driver Park on August 29th calling for a complete moratorium on deportation and detentions. Despite aggressive attempts by Border Watch to disrupt the rally, guest speakers electrified the crowd, such as Juan Angel Guerra, the South Texas District Attorney who had sued sitting Vice Presdient Dick Cheney.
Soon after, the group joined a press conference with members of the African American community to call for a federal investigation into the racism at the Houston Fire Department.
In 2009 La Raza joined the call to end the deportation program 287g, which was defeated at the city level, and was part of victorious campaign to remove Lou Dobbs from CNN.
The group co-sponsored the first annual Dia De La Raza parade on Little York, which was featured all day on Univision.
The group continually attempted to focus on community awareness, or concientización, as its primary method to effective social change.
The organization’s president, Hector Chavana Jr. has been invited to be a guest of honor at The World’s Largest Rosca celebration on January 9th at City Hall.
