The Spaniards – Colonization

This week, my daughter won a blindly judged writing contest, in which over six hundred students submitted essays in Spanish on the benefits of being bilingual.

As part of her prize, she read in front of the abassador from spain. (I wanted to speak with him about reparations, but not suprisingly his time was limited, and he had to leave before the students got to read their essays).

Anyway, my mind started wandering, also not surprsing. Many people de conciencia often equte the Iraqi invasion to every other form of European-minded aggression, since the middle ages. But I started thinking about the mechanisms that create the support of the masses for such invasions.

Back then, the dominance of the Christianity was imminent. And anything to further Christianity was unquestionably supported.

Religion is still important to people, but I can’t envision a scenario in which the concept of Christianity would justify imperialist expansion to the masses. It just doesn’t hold that importance in people’s lives, at least not around these parts. Back then, Christianity’s expansion was unquestionably acceptable, even by violent means. Though at that time, just as today, the powers that be used this esoteric concepts to expand their power.

Now Christianity no longer holds the justification that it used to, but capitalitic democracy does. It seems that the democracy of capitalistic democracy can justify violent means, as long as the EEUU is going in to promote these ideals.

So I was wondering if the same mechanisims (just different ideologies) were used to justify the enslavement and torture of Mexican people and other indigenous communities. If so, then it seems that not only are the elites up to the same thing, but it seems that the masses in these Euro-minded counties are not that different either. It just made the two invasions and epochs even more similar to me than ever.

What I did try to imagine is what might make capitalistic democracy so irrelevant that it could no longer be used to justify imperialist aggression. Perhaps I have my answer in this economic meltdown.
