Then get with it

I haven’t been intimidated to stick out like a sore thumb among my peers for my positions.

I have also been critical of Obama, even though for most, he is the great hope.  Today is no different.  Though my issues with Obama and the Dems in general are much greater, I’ll stick to the salient point of immigration for today.

As of Wednesday, The Obama administration has expanded the powers of ICE

Under a new deal aimed at settling a long-running turf dispute with the Drug Enforcement Administration, more agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement would get authority to investigate drug cases.

Some might say that this would shift the ICE focus from raids to drugs, but I’m not buying it.  I think, like Obama loves to remind us, they can walk and chew gum at the same time. They can come after workers and narcos at the same time. Now, they will have the extra pretext of drugs to harass people with.

I remember being a young father:  Having stopped at an INS checkpoint, I asked them about their ominous sign, proclaiming how many people and drugs they had confiscated.  I didn’t have my activist hat on, nor was I rude.  I had my father and husband hat on, and I was just asking a question that we were wondering about: “do those numbers pertain to this particular checkpoint or to the whole border.”  Bad idea.

On the way home, I was stopped by a county deputy and later by an officer of the state’s drug task force.  Both asked to search my trunk.  (Incidentally, this is not the only time that I have been pulled over twice in the same day.)

When I got home, I still hadn’t made the connection between my question and the stops.  It was my father, a veterano of the Raza Unida Party, who had to connect the dots for me.

I am sure they would have checked me right at the checkpoint had  that particular officer possessed that power.  They reminded me that I should remember that I am a dumb, mindless Mexican who should read signs only, and be intimidated, but not wonder or at least not ask.  I digress.

Anyway.  Yesterday, I heard from some compas that there was a raid in South Central.

to be exact.

Today, Obama proclaims that he’s “committed to comprehensive immigration reform.”

Chop chop, Obama, we’re tired of hoping. Hope turns to anger in the blink of an eye.
